Following his meeting with Siemens Healthineers, the President of the Republic received Mr. Michael Fischer, Chief Executive Officer of GAUFF Engineering, a long-standing partner of Senegal in the fields of energy and infrastructure.
The discussion began with what is already delivering results. The rural electrification programme, implemented through the ASER project, has demonstrated that solar energy can bring electricity to communities that had never been reached by the conventional power grid. The ambition now is to go further by extending this model to new villages and harnessing solar power for agriculture, enabling irrigation and the processing of agricultural products closer to where they are produced.
The other major topic addressed a challenge that resurfaces with every rainy season: flooding. The Head of State emphasized the need to develop sanitation and drainage infrastructure for both urban and rural areas, as well as to improve the management of wastewater and stormwater, so that entire communities no longer have to face the anxiety that accompanies the first heavy rains. GAUFF has successfully delivered projects of this scale elsewhere on the continent, and the objective is to bring that expertise to Senegal.
Beyond the technical aspects lies a principle that the President has consistently upheld throughout these engagements: a partnership is only meaningful if it translates into tangible improvements in people’s lives a village with access to electricity, a farm that becomes more productive, and a family that can sleep peacefully when the skies grow dark with rain.
