On Tuesday, 23 June 2026, in Berlin, the President of the Republic of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, held talks with the Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, His Excellency Friedrich Merz.
The two leaders praised the strength of a longstanding relationship built on cordial friendship and mutual respect, nurtured since the early years of Senegal’s independence through regular high-level exchanges. The Head of State highlighted Germany’s consistent support for Senegal’s development efforts, particularly in the areas of water resources, transport, health, education, vocational training, justice, and energy, as well as its role as Senegal’s leading bilateral partner during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The meeting confirmed the growing momentum of the economic partnership between the two countries, illustrated by the agreements concluded the previous day during the German-Senegalese Economic Day and by the increasing interest of German companies in Senegal. The President reaffirmed that Senegal remains a safe and attractive destination for investors and called for further strengthening and diversification of this dynamic, in line with the priorities of the Senegal Vision 2050 agenda.
On international affairs, the two leaders noted a convergence of views on several African and global challenges. The Head of State emphasized the importance of continued support for Senegal’s efforts to combat terrorism in the Sahel, reaffirmed Senegal’s commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue, and advocated for a more open and inclusive system of global governance.
The President of the Republic also extended an invitation to the Federal Chancellor to undertake an official visit to Senegal, marking a new step in a partnership that both countries are determined to elevate to an even higher level.
