May 1st: President Diomaye Faye Receives the Lists of Grievances from Trade Union Confederations

Speech - 2026 May 01

On the occasion of International Workers’ Day, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar FAYE, presided today at the Presidential Palace over the official ceremony for the submission of the lists of grievances by trade union organizations.

Before the assembled social partners, the Head of State welcomed the progress achieved within one year in the implementation of the National Pact for Social Stability. The adoption by the Council of Ministers of the draft Labour Code and Social Security Code, the generalization of the housing allowance in the Civil Service, the wage increases for agricultural workers and domestic workers, the significant recruitment efforts in education, health, and higher education, as well as the gradual extension of social protection to workers in the informal economy, all demonstrate the real, progressive, and measurable implementation of the State’s commitments.

The President of the Republic solemnly recalled that respect for the social truce, freely agreed upon for three years, remains the condition for a sustainably peaceful social climate. He also welcomed the agreement signed on April 16 in the education and training sector, the result of negotiations conducted diligently by the Government.

Setting the course for 2026, the Head of State instructed the Government to focus its action on six priorities: finalizing structural reforms, strengthening social protection, improving purchasing power, promoting employment and employability, consolidating social dialogue, and reinforcing the capacities of the Labour Administration.

Reaffirming the State’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations, President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar FAYE called on all social partners to act responsibly in order to preserve the climate of trust that remains the primary condition for economic and social progress.

“The profound transformation of Senegal will not take place without sincere and constructive social dialogue, without decent and productive work for all, and without effective social justice,” concluded the Head of State.
