Press releases - 2026 February 06

Early in the morning, the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, began the second day of his economic tour with a visit to Kidira to inspect the construction site of the Kidira–Bakel road, a major piece of infrastructure along the Tambacounda–Kidira–Bakel corridor.

This structuring project forms part of the rehabilitation works on National Roads 1 and 2, covering a total length of 250 kilometers, including 65 km for the Kidira–Bakel section. It represents a total investment of over CFA francs 116 billion and aims to sustainably improve mobility, road safety, and people’s access to social and economic services.
Beyond the road itself, the project includes several high-impact complementary developments:
• 200 km of rural tracks to open up production areas;
• urban road networks in Kidira and Bakel;
• drainage structures, road signage, and parking areas for heavy trucks;
• public street lighting in several localities;
• the construction of social infrastructure (health huts and posts, maternity wards, schools, boreholes, and community facilities).
In terms of employment, the project has already created 1,373 jobs, 62% of which are local, clearly illustrating the link between infrastructure development, job integration, and local economic growth.
By traveling to Kidira early in the morning, the Head of State reaffirmed a clear political orientation: making territorial connectivity a lever for sovereignty, territorial equity, and job creation, in line with the commitment to designate 2026 as the Year of Employment and the Social and Solidarity Economy, and with the Senegal 2050 vision.
This stage reflects a strong conviction: connecting territories means unlocking their economic potential and strengthening national unity.
