International - 2026 January 14

As part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, the President of the Republic took part in the roundtable of Heads of State and delivered the opening address of a side event dedicated to supporting the preparatory process of the United Nations Conference on Water, which Senegal will co-organize with the United Arab Emirates in 2026.

In his interventions, the Head of State emphasized the strategic importance of water, at the crossroads of climate, peace, security, and sustainable development. He called for strengthened international mobilization in response to the impacts of climate change, which disproportionately affect the most vulnerable countries, particularly in Africa.
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye highlighted the importance of the high-level preparatory meeting scheduled to take place in Dakar on 26 and 27 January 2026, which will constitute a decisive milestone in the process. This inclusive, multi-stakeholder meeting will assess progress made, identify remaining gaps, and accelerate the implementation of international commitments on water, ahead of the 2026 Conference, which is expected to mark a decisive shift from commitments to concrete action.
